June 20 – Grande Prairie, Alberta

The sun was shining when we awoke, a distinct change from the past few days.  And, while it clouded up during our drive from Grande Cache north to Grande Prairie, the sun reappeared this afternoon and the temperatures made it to 69o.

Shortly after leaving the hilltop community of Grande Cache, we passed a large coal strip-mining operation

as well as the result of a land reclamation project.

Our route, actually the only route, was generally devoid of traffic

and took us over hill and dale.

sometimes at elevations above the clouds which were settled in the valleys.

We passed large-scale timbering operations

and oil drilling sites,

again with a flame-off to eliminate excess gas.

As with the oil wells and coal mining, national laws require extensive land reclamation.

After arriving at our Grande Prairie campground, we headed out to do some shopping before heading to British Columbia in the morning.  Before hitting the grocery store, however, we stopped off at Crystal Lake … where we spent a couple of hours observing and photographing birds and water fowl.  While we never spotted the resident pair of trumpet swans, we were privileged to see

Blue-billed Ruddy Ducks

Redheaded Ducks

Grackles

Franklin Gulls

A Mother Coop and her Chicks

Mew Gulls

Red-winged Blackbirds

Yellow-headed Blackbirds

and one bird we’ve seen all over Alberta but have thus far been unable to identify (help welcomed)!
