May 1, 2013, 2013 – Drive to Lexington, KY

Our drive to Lexington, KY was long but uneventful .  Traveling west across southern West Virginia as up-and-down across ridges of the Appalachian and Allegheny Mountains.  The redbuds and white dogwoods were in full bloom

and exposed rock strata evident where blasting had been required to construct the Interstate.

(I’m always in awe of how long it must have taken to lay down these layers of rock and how quickly man can destroy them)

Debbie always loves the signs indicating long, relatively steep downgrades …

where we need to downshift to create engine drag so as not to put too much wear on the brakes.

Passing through Charleston, West Virginia’s Capitol Building is dramatic against an otherwise forgettable cityscape.

Once in Lexington, we spotted a great advertisement for a local barber.
