April 23, 2010 – Still Heading East on US Route 50, Kansas

We woke to a crystal clear sky, the threatening skies of the past forty-eight hours gone!

Continuing our drive east along US Route 50 … the Santa Fe Trail … (which we’d initially picked up in La Junta, CO), we were able to get a taste of rural middle America which would have been impossible if we’d opted for an Interstate.

Our trip took us from the flat ranch and farm lands to the rolling hills with more and more trees.

We passed the wind farms in Spearville (which bills itself as the wind capital of the country) …

rail yards of Newton and mile long trains running parallel to the road …

occasional decaying building …

and hundreds of small and large farms with their brilliant green fields.

We arrived at what is, surprisingly, the only RV campground in the Overland Park (Kansas City) area.

We’ll be here through Sunday, visiting family.
