February 28 thru March 1, 2010 – Palmetto Bluff, SC

We had an opportunity to spend a couple of days with my cousin Bob and his wife Mary Jane  in Bluffton, SC.

Before arriving, we wondered why they’d picked up and moved from New England to the low country of coastal South Carolina.  However, it didn’t take long to discover that in Palmetto Bluff they’d found a truly unique and incredibly beautiful community set amidst 22,000 acres of pristine maritime forest and winding estuaries bordering the May and New Rivers.  With large areas of this historic plantation having been permanently protected through conservation easements it is home to many species of wildlife, including egrets, blue herons, ibises, foxes, deer, boars, many species of fish and even an extremely rare black panther has been spotted.

In addition to a storybook-looking village, an internationally recognized inn and a post card church whose pews are made from beams rescued from a building which was destroyed on 9/11.

Palmetto Bluffs has a golf course, huge equestrian area and miles of trails for biking and hiking.

Nearby are dozens of art galleries, “local” restaurants (including at least one which caters to both people and their pets.

and an oyster fishing and shucking operation which looks like it was the prototype for the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company.

Still, the chance to visit with Bob and MJ made this past weekend special!
