February 26, 2010 – Hilton Head Island

We had a short drive to Hilton Head where we’ll spend the next 4 days and landed a great camp site amid palm trees and only 200′ from the water.

We toured Hilton Head this afternoon.  Interestingly, there is no town center.  Further, all commercial properties, including stores, are located well-back from the road behind a screen of thick vegetation.  Building exteriors and signage are also tightly restricted to blend into the landscape.

It is also an island of contrasts.  While there are elegant homes overlooking the salt marshes, scores of private and upscale condo projects and more than a dozen championship golf courses … there are also sections of small and extremely modest homes, many inhabited by the descendants of former slaves.

We had a great time walking through one of many salt marshes teaming with egrets, blue heron and other shore birds …

and also climbed the Harbour Town Lighthouse in which the history of the island is told on the walls as you climb the 114 steps to the observation level.
