We left Beaumont under a beautiful, sunny morning and headed toward Houston.
From the time we left Beaumont our motor home was regularly buffeted by a brisk northern cross-wind which had US and Texas state flags standing out.
Along our route of travel, the Texas “star” was omnipresent, emblazoned on everything from atop privately-owned buildings
Heading west from Houston, while not surprised at typical evacuation signs
today was the first time we seen evacuation route emblems painted on the streets.
Debbie added two more elevated water towers to her collection,
abandoned and overgrown railroad bridges,
and an unusual sign encouraging folks to stop in at their restaurant and gas station.
Nearing Austin, we saw reminders of the devastating fires which burned more than 1,000 square miles in 2011.
This afternoon we visited with my cousin Mike Kelly, his wife Val and incredibly delightful daughters Alex and Erin.
