July 21 – Carl E. Wynn Nature Center

This morning, Debbie and I took a drive along the highlands overlooking Homer and Kachemak Bay.  Although foggy, with a few short stretches actually in the clouds, there were few decent places to take any worthwhile pictures.

We did, however, see a wide variety of homes, ranging from the most “modest”

to more upscale residences

to the unusualto others with great views and expensive price tags. There were also a number of B&Bs, one with a great sign.

We were surprised to pass a number of fields which had already been hayed.

Finally, however, we stumbled across a place with which we could relate …

And, although only a bit after 10AM, we decided it was too good an opportunity to pass up.

As there are no vineyards in Alaska, they import their grapes and then blend them with locally grown berries, which are in abundant supply.  The resulting wines are delicious!

Back at our RV, we saw “just another bald eagle” sitting on a rock just off the beach at our campground.

Mid-afternoon, we traveled to the Carl E. Wynn Nature Center.  The only wildlife we saw was a Wilson’s Warbler.

But, the fauna was magnificent, a sampling of which included

Northern Geranium

Monkshood (poisonous)

Nagonberry

Star Gentian

Coastal Indian Paintbrush

Another pot luck fish fry, courtesy of Dave and Joe, two members of our group who had had a very successful day of haddock fishing ended another great day in Alaska.
