August 24, 2013 – Golden to Colorado Springs/Manitou Springs

Today was a travel day, leaving Golden for the Colorado Springs area.  There was not all that much to see along I-25,

Another of the lighthouses we have found across America … far from any body of water

Granite outcroppings (many estimated to be more than 1 billion years old)

An occasional farm building

The remains of a recent automobile accident

A B-52  mounted at the entrance of the U.S. Air Force Academy … where we plan to visit on Monday

Parachutists operating out of the Academy’s air base

although we did get our first glimpse of 14,000+ foot Pike Peak,

which we’ll summit (via the cog railway) this coming Tuesday.

Our campground in Manitou Springs is in the shadow of the mountain and visible from our campsite!

We were surprised to find that one of our “fellow campers” had eight legs and a red hourglass-shaped marking on its back.

Black Widow Spider

I also shot some pictures of one of our fellow traveler couples, Debi and Dave Normington’s incredibly cute dog.

Quincy

We ended the day with a Mexican-themed pot-luck dinner, ice cream supplied by the campground and another of our outdoor movie nights watching A Night at the Museum.
